Haj Pilgrims to Pay Rs 10,000 More Due to Increase in ATF Prices
Published on May 03, 2026
Haj pilgrims are set to face higher expenses in 2026, as the cost of the pilgrimage has increased by ₹10,000 due to a sharp rise in Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) prices.
The Haj Committee of India has approved the one-time hike, citing increased operational costs linked to fuel price surges.
Reason Behind Price Increase
Officials stated that airlines had initially demanded a much higher increase of up to USD 400 per pilgrim. However, after negotiations, the additional cost was capped at approximately USD 100 (around ₹10,000).
Authorities described the hike as a necessary step to ensure smooth conduct of the pilgrimage and avoid any disruptions in travel arrangements.
Government and Political Reactions
While the government defended the decision as unavoidable, opposition leaders have criticised the increase, calling it unfair to pilgrims and raising concerns about affordability.
The issue has sparked debate across political circles, making it a key topic in ongoing national discussions.
Impact on Pilgrims
The cost hike is expected to affect thousands of pilgrims preparing for Haj 2026, especially those from economically weaker sections.
Despite the increase, authorities have assured that efforts are being made to maintain affordability and ensure a smooth pilgrimage experience.
