Assam MLAs Under Scanner: 17% Face Criminal Cases, 85% Are Crorepatis, Says ADR

In a major political development under latest news Assam, a report released by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) has revealed that 17 per cent of the newly elected Assam MLAs have declared criminal cases against themselves.

According to the report, 21 out of the 126 MLAs face criminal charges, once again raising concerns over the criminalisation of politics in the state.

Party-Wise Criminal Cases Among MLAs

The report states that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has 7 MLAs with criminal cases, while the Congress has 9 out of its 19 MLAs facing such charges.

In contrast, the Bodoland Peoples Front (BPF) stood out with all 10 of its MLAs reportedly having a clean record without criminal cases.

Serious Charges Mentioned In Report

The ADR report highlighted that serious allegations such as attempt to murder and crimes against women were reported across leaders belonging to multiple political parties, including BJP, Congress, AIUDF, Trinamool Congress, Raijor Dal, and Asom Gana Parishad (AGP).

85% MLAs Declared Crorepatis

On the financial front, the report revealed that 85 per cent of Assam MLAs are crorepatis. Out of the 126 legislators, 107 declared assets worth more than ₹1 crore.

The BJP reportedly leads with 90 per cent wealthy MLAs, followed by the BPF with 80 per cent and Congress with 74 per cent.

Richest MLAs In Assam

AIUDF leader Mohammed Badruddin Ajmal was named the richest MLA with assets exceeding ₹226 crore. He was followed by Sewli Mohilary and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in terms of declared wealth.
