Guwahati Floods: GMC Contractors Blame Public, Warn Rs 5,000 Fine for Dumping Waste
By Sach Reality Bureau | May 01, 2026
The ongoing Guwahati flood situation has sparked fresh debate after the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) Contractors’ Association blamed public negligence for the recurring waterlogging crisis. The issue has become a major highlight in breaking news Guwahati and latest news Assam updates.
Public Blamed for Artificial Flooding
According to the association, the primary reason behind frequent flooding is the irresponsible disposal of garbage, especially plastic bottles and waste, into city drains. This practice is reportedly blocking drainage systems and creating what they described as “artificial floods.”
Government Response and Ongoing Efforts
Defending the administration, the contractors stated that multiple government departments are working continuously to manage the flood situation. They acknowledged minor shortcomings but claimed that the situation is being exaggerated in public discourse.
Rs 5,000 Fine Warning for Offenders
In a strict move, authorities have warned that anyone caught dumping waste into drains could face a penalty of Rs 5,000. Officials also suggested that offenders might be recorded and exposed on social media platforms like Facebook to discourage such behaviour.
Call for Better Coordination
The association further recommended that flood control and drainage responsibilities be handled by a single department to improve coordination and accountability. Experts believe this could help reduce confusion and improve response efficiency during heavy rainfall.
