Police officials announced on Tuesday that they had detained the father of the 17-year-old boy believed to have been driving a Porsche involved in a fatal accident in Pune, Maharashtra.
Allegedly intoxicated, the teenager crashed the Porsche into two motorbike riders in the Kalyani Nagar area early Sunday morning, resulting in their deaths. According to Commissioner of Police Amitesh Kumar, the father was apprehended in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and is being transported to Pune for arrest in connection with the case.
Authorities filed charges against the teenager’s father, who works as a real estate developer, under sections 75 and 77 of the Juvenile Justice Act. Additionally, they pressed charges against the owners and staff of the bar for serving alcohol to a minor. These cases have been transferred to the crime branch for investigation, as stated by an official.
Section 75 of the Juvenile Justice Act pertains to the willful neglect or exposure of a child to mental or physical harm, while section 77 addresses the supply of intoxicating substances to minors. The FIR mentioned that despite knowing his son lacked a valid driver’s license, the father provided him with the car, thereby jeopardizing his safety. Furthermore, he allowed his son to consume alcohol despite being aware of the habit, as detailed in the FIR.
After a party in the early hours of Sunday, a group of friends on motorbikes encountered tragedy when a speeding Porsche collided with one of the motorcycles at Kalyani Nagar junction. The collision resulted in the deaths of Anis Awadhiya and Ashwini Costa, both 24-year-old IT professionals from Madhya Pradesh, according to the police.
Following the incident, the teenager allegedly driving the Porsche was brought before the Juvenile Justice Board and granted bail shortly afterward. The board instructed him to visit the Regional Transport Office to study traffic regulations and present his findings within 15 days. Additionally, the board ordered the juvenile to compose a 300-word essay on road accidents and their potential solutions.
The police have registered a case against the teenager under section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the Indian Penal Code and relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act. On Monday, authorities announced their intention to seek permission from a higher court to try the teenager as an adult due to the severity of the charges.
