In a major boost to connectivity in Assam, the Kumar Bhaskar Varma Bridge has now been opened for the movement of two-wheelers and other light vehicles. Authorities have clarified that buses and heavy vehicles, including trucks, are currently not allowed to use the bridge. The restriction has been put in place as a precaution as traffic movement begins in phases.

Earlier in the day, vehicular movement had not started in the morning, but the bridge was later opened for vehicles around noon. Interestingly, before traffic officially began, several local residents were seen using the bridge for morning walks.

The bridge spans about 1.24 kilometres across the Brahmaputra River, connecting Guwahati with North Guwahati, and is expected to significantly reduce travel time between the two areas.

The bridge was inaugurated by Narendra Modi on February 14, 2026. Built at a cost of over ₹3,000 crore, it is the first extradosed bridge in Northeast India, equipped with modern engineering features including seismic safety systems and real-time structural monitoring.

Named after the 7th-century Kamarupa ruler Kumar Bhaskar Varma, the bridge is expected to greatly improve connectivity and ease traffic movement in the region.
