On May 14, 2025, BSF constable Purnam Kumar Shaw, who had been in the custody of Pakistan Rangers since April 23, was handed back to Indian authorities. The handover took place at the Attari Joint Check Post in Amritsar around 10:30 AM, following established protocols. Shaw had accidentally crossed into Pakistani territory while on duty near Ferozepur, Punjab. He was detained by Pakistan Rangers after unknowingly moving into Pakistan while resting during his patrol.

Shaw’s family expressed immense relief upon hearing the news of his safe return. They thanked the Indian government and the BSF for their efforts in securing his release. The family described the past two weeks as filled with anxiety and uncertainty, and they were overjoyed to finally have Shaw back home. A family member shared their happiness and eagerly awaited the chance to speak with him.

Shaw, who hails from West Bengal, was on duty near the border fence when he inadvertently crossed into Pakistan while seeking shelter in a shaded area. He was carrying his service rifle at the time. Following the incident, the Indian Army and Pakistan Rangers held a flag meeting to resolve the matter and facilitate Shaw’s safe return.

This incident occurred just one day after the deadly Pahalgam terror attack, which saw 26 civilians killed in Baisaran Valley. Despite the tense security situation, Shaw’s return highlights the ongoing diplomatic efforts to resolve such incidents between the two nations.
