Magh Bihu marks the end of the harvesting season in the month of Magh (January-February) and celebrates the hard work of farmers. The name “Bhogali” comes from the word “Bhog,” meaning feasting. True to its name, the festival is synonymous with sumptuous feasts and traditional delicacies that highlight the culinary richness of Assam.

Why is Uruka Night So Special?

The celebrations begin with Uruka, the night before Magh Bihu. It is a night of togetherness where families, friends, and neighbors gather for a grand community feast. People prepare elaborate meals that often include fish, meat, rice, and a variety of pithas (rice cakes).

What Role Does the Bhela Ghar Play?

The Bhela Ghar is not just a hut but a symbol of unity and tradition. On the morning of Magh Bihu, the Bhela Ghar is ceremonially burnt, accompanied by bonfires. The act signifies bidding farewell to the old and welcoming the new with renewed hope and joy.

Children and elders alike gather around the bonfire, singing traditional songs and savoring the first meal of the day, which often includes roasted potatoes and puffed rice.

Which Delicacies Define Magh Bihu?

Magh Bihu is a gastronomical delight, showcasing the essence of Assamese cuisine. Traditional preparations like til pitha (sesame-filled rice cakes), narikolor laru (coconut laddoos), and sunga pitha (rice cakes steamed in bamboo) dominate the festive platters. Jolpan, a breakfast assortment of rice, curd, and jaggery, is another beloved delicacy.
