Jewellery worth nearly Rs. 8 crore was looted from a showroom in Barpeta Road town of Assam on February 20, in a bold robbery carried out in broad daylight. The incident has raised serious concerns over security in busy commercial areas.
According to police sources, a five-member gang entered the Senco Gold & Diamonds showroom posing as customers before executing the heist. The accused were reportedly armed with pistols and held around nine to ten employees at gunpoint inside the store.
The robbers allegedly terrorised the staff, assaulted some employees, and spent close to half an hour inside the showroom while looting gold and diamond ornaments. Before fleeing, they also damaged the CCTV cameras in an apparent attempt to destroy evidence.
The showroom is located in a crowded commercial zone, just about 100 metres from the Barpeta Road Police Station, making the incident even more alarming from a law and order perspective.
Police rushed to the spot soon after receiving information and have launched a detailed investigation. Efforts are underway to identify and track down the accused involved in the high-value robbery.
