In a dazzling display of aerial precision and military might, the Indian Air Force today conducted its first-ever full-scale air show in the Northeast at the skies above the Brahmaputra at Lachit Ghat, Guwahati. The event marked the 93rd anniversary of the IAF, which saw more than 75 aircraft and helicopters fly in over 25 formations, captivating thousands of onlookers.

A Historic Celebration

The display began at noon and lasted until 2 pm, with participating formations taking off from seven bases: Guwahati, Tezpur, Jorhat, Chabua, Hasimara, Bagdogra, and Panagarh. Every formation had a symbolic name like “Lachit”, “Kaziranga”, “Manas”, “Barak” and “Haati” reflecting the rich heritage and geography of Assam.

The most emotional moment, however, came when the LCA Tejas, with the call sign “Lachit”, led the flypast in honor of Assam’s legendary general, Lachit Borphukan. Top-class aircraft that participated in the event included the Rafale, Sukhoi-30 MKI, MiG-29, Mirage, and Jaguar. The high point of the show was when the Rafale flew a supersonic, low-level pass over the river, drawing cheers and claps from the crowd.

Aerobatics, Tribute and Precision

The famed Surya Kiran Aerobatic Team gave the finishing touches with some breathtaking formations, including a DNA-shaped loop trailing the Indian tricolour and a heart pierced by an arrow, which was dedicated to the citizens of Guwahati. The Air Warrior Drill Team “Arjun” comprising 28 air warriors also performed a synchronized rifle drill demonstration to conclude the show.

Crowds, Culture & Connection

People crowded the banks of Lachit Ghat, with many covering themselves from the afternoon sun to watch the aerial performance. The event also seamlessly wove in a touch of culture: the song “Mayabini” by the late singer Zubeen Garg was played, making the event connect to the people and the place.

The function was attended by Assam’s Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, and Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya, as the region paid tribute to the service of the IAF and symbolized the growing strategic importance of the Northeast in India’s defense and connectivity frameworks.

Looking Ahead

The event is being seen as more than just a show of force. It underlines the IAF’s commitment to public engagement and regional integration, besides fostering careers and interest in defence services amongst North-Eastern youth. The aerial display at the heart of Guwahati’s riverfront marks a strong statement about the region’s rising significance in India’s strategic and cultural map.
