In a significant political development ahead of the Assam Assembly elections, the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee has announced that it has temporarily paused alliance talks with Raijor Dal.
APCC president Gaurav Gogoi said the Congress had been trying to forge an electoral alliance with Raijor Dal to contest the upcoming Assembly elections as a united opposition.
However, Gogoi stated that the discussions have been temporarily put on hold due to the lack of a conducive political environment to move forward with the alliance.
In a Facebook post addressing speculation about a possible opposition alliance in Assam, Gogoi said the people of the state had hoped for a united opposition to challenge the ruling government. He added that the Congress held several rounds of discussions and also broadly negotiated on seat-sharing arrangements with Raijor Dal as part of the alliance talks.
But despite multiple efforts, the two parties could not create the positive and promising environment required to finalise the alliance. As a result, the Congress has decided to take a temporary break from the alliance discussions with Raijor Dal for now.Gogoi also indicated that the issue of a possible alliance may be reconsidered in the future, depending on the political situation as the Assembly elections draw closer.
