A major milestone in the development of the Assam economy is expected to soon be reached as the manufacturing unit for mobile phones is to be set up in the state. This will mark the formal foray of Assam into the ever-growing electronics manufacturing domain in India.
“Sharing this news with all of you. The coming unit would further enhance our ‘Made in India, Made in Assam’ policy and signal a transformation towards technology-driven production in the Northeast. Though details on this company and amount invested have not been shared yet, this news in itself is a strong indication that there have been advanced talks and policy readiness on this within our state government,” said the state’s Chief Minister.
In the case of Assam, the cellular phone manufacturing facility is not only a production unit. It is a sign of diversification of the economy from the usual sectors of tea production, petroleum, and agriculture. The production of electronics is a labor-intensive process, especially for assembling. This particular project is expected to open a large number of job opportunities for youths.
The move is also in line with the broader industrialization drive of the state of Assam, with the launch of the state’s semiconductor and electronics policies. The state of Assam could take center stage as a production hub for the Northeast region since it will be housing the handset manufacturing unit.
According to industry watchers, the Indian mobile manufacturing industry has grown significantly over the past ten years with encouragement from government initiatives, a steadily growing local base, and even a potential for international exports. The involvement of Assam in mobile technology manufacturing can provide a balanced spread across different regions with emerging markets in eastern and northeastern regions of India.
The state government has been making efforts to encourage infrastructure development, ease of doing business, and investments to facilitate such projects. They are of the opinion that once such a facility is up and running, other related industries such as component manufacturing, packaging, logistics, or repairing services may also establish themselves in the same region.
