Assam has taken a major step towards digital governance with the introduction of its first artificial intelligence-powered news anchor, ‘Ankita.’ The AI anchor will present key cabinet updates to the public in Assamese, aiming to strengthen government communication and engage citizens more effectively.
The AI-generated anchor made her debut with a presentation covering recent cabinet decisions, including the renaming of Dibrugarh Airport after cultural icon Bhupen Hazarika and the announcement of a one-time financial grant for tea garden workers. Ankita’s lifelike expressions, voice modulation, and fluent delivery in Assamese signal a shift in how public information is disseminated.
This launch builds on Assam’s growing interest in technology-driven initiatives. Last year, the state introduced “Iris,” its first AI teacher, at Royal Global School in Guwahati. The latest move mirrors a national trend, with platforms like Doordarshan Kisan already using AI anchors to deliver sector-specific updates.
Officials believe that AI tools like Ankita will make governance more interactive and accessible, especially for tech-aware younger audiences.
