The Assam government has made a significant push towards fulfilling the promise of “housing for all” with the distribution of approval letters under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana‑Gramin, PMAY-G, to 3,25,234 rural families across the state. The sanction letters are being handed over along with the release of the first installment for house construction.

The Chief Minister termed the event a “historic day” for the State’s housing movement while speaking at a public event in Boko. He said this drive effectively clears the backlog of pending cases under PMAY-G and puts more rural families on track to owning permanent pucca homes.

Sarma mentioned that the sanction letters were distributed to 3.88 lakh families earlier in March 2025, after which the first installment of ₹ 37,500 was released for the start of the construction process.

Official data states that Assam has already sanctioned over 22 lakh houses under PMAY-G. Of these, nearly 20 lakh rural houses have been completed, bringing the state significantly closer to its rural housing targets.

What This Means on the Ground

The said step has come as a turning point for 3.25 lakh families who received approval letters this week, as they moved from waiting lists to active construction plans.

Payment of the first installment removes one major financial obstacle for beneficiaries, who can now begin constructing their houses.

With the backlog cleared, further focus shall be to complete ongoing constructions and ensure quality housing in rural Assam.

Officials have said that the focus of the next phase will be on timely completion of houses, geo-tagging, and transparent monitoring to avoid delays. With these latest approvals, Assam inches closer to turning “a pucca house for every rural family” into a reality.
