The trial related to the death of singer Zubeen Garg resumed on Monday at the District and Sessions Court in Guwahati. All seven accused were produced before the court through virtual mode. The court has scheduled the next hearing for January 3, during which charges are expected to be formally framed.

The accused in the case include North East India Festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, Zubeen Garg’s manager Siddharth Sharma, his cousin and APS officer Sandipan Garg, drummer Shekharjyoti Goswami, co-singer Amrit Prabha Mahanta, and the late singer’s personal security officers Paresh Baishya and Nandeswar Borah.

According to court records, Shyamkanu Mahanta, Siddharth Sharma, Sandipan Garg, and the two personal security officers are currently lodged at Baksa District Jail. Drummer Shekharjyoti Goswami and co-singer Amrit Prabha Mahanta are lodged at Haflong Jail.

The Assam Police Special Investigation Team has submitted a detailed 2,500-page chargesheet before the Kamrup Chief Judicial Magistrate Court. Murder charges under Section 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita have been applied against four of the seven accused — Shyamkanu Mahanta, Siddharth Sharma, Shekharjyoti Goswami, and Amrit Prabha Mahanta.

Zubeen Garg’s sister, Dr. Palmee Borthakur, was present during the court proceedings. She reiterated the family’s faith in the government, the Assam Police SIT, and the judicial process. It was also stated that the family is yet to receive a certified copy of the chargesheet. Concerns were raised over the conduct of the accused, as no expression of remorse was observed during the virtual appearance.

Meanwhile, it has emerged that Amrit Prabha Mahanta has appointed advocate Gabriel Sahu, a practising lawyer at the Gauhati High Court since 2012, to represent her in the case.

As the trial progresses, the proceedings remain under close scrutiny, with the next hearing on January 3 expected to mark a significant stage in the case. Public attention continues to remain focused on the judicial process in the pursuit of justice.
