Namrup, a major fertiliser complex in Assam, was marked with the formal commencement of a fertiliser project on 21st December, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi conducting the bhumi poojan ceremony of a new Ammonia Urea unit. The proposed fertiliser unit, to be set up by Assam Valley Fertiliser & Chemical Company Ltd in the existing Brahmaputra Valley Fertiliser Corporation complex, is expected to provide employment to over 1,000 people, besides 300 jobs in the fertiliser sector.

The proposed fertilizer production plant, which will be established with an investment of Rs 10,600 crore, would have a production capacity of around 12 lakh metric tonnes of fertilizer every year and would be operational by the year 2030. It would reduce the import dependence of the country to a great extent, thereby providing fertilizer to farmers on the correct timeline.

Prime Minister Modi added that this project also encourages Atmanirbhar Bharat and Atmanirbhar Assam, thus contributing to an increase in employment as well as industries in this region. This was followed by comments from the Chief Minister of Assam, HIMANTA Biswa Sarma, saying that this project also represents the growing importance of the state as an engine of development for “Northeast under the double-engine government.”
