Assam has officially stepped into the global music arena by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with BookMyShow to organise international concerts under the state’s new Concert Tourism Policy. The agreement was formalised in Guwahati on June 24 in the presence of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

The collaboration launches with a major act, global pop star Post Malone, who will perform in Guwahati on December 8. With this, Assam aims to host three to four international concerts annually, transforming Guwahati into a key destination for live music.

The Chief Minister highlighted that infrastructure limitations had previously hindered such events. He revealed that the state had to turn down a proposal from Guns N’ Roses last year due to a clash with a T20 cricket match, as only one major venue was available. However, this is set to change with the upcoming Amingaon Stadium and a redeveloped Nehru Stadium, which will allow the state to simultaneously host concerts and sports events.

Sarma also noted that leading industrialists have shown interest in building dedicated concert venues in Guwahati, seeing the city as a gateway to Northeast and Southeast Asia.

He clarified that Assam is not competing with neighbouring Meghalaya’s live music scene but complementing it, with plans to extend future concerts to cities like Dibrugarh and Jorhat.

With rising hospitality investment, improving infrastructure, and better connectivity, Assam is positioning itself as an emerging force in international music tourism.
