List sent to BJP national president J.P. Nadda for final decision; elections to be held on June 19 for two vacant seats
Assam BJP has shortlisted 13 candidates for the June 19, 2025, Rajya Sabha polls. These have been recommended to BJP National President J.P. Nadda for selection. The polls are to fill the two seats held by Mission Ranjan Das (BJP) and Birendra Prasad Baishya (Asom Gana Parishad – AGP), whose term ends on June 14.
According to the National Democratic Alliance’s (NDA) seat-sharing understanding, BJP and its ally AGP are to fight one seat each. A State Election Committee meeting of BJP, where Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and State BJP President Dilip Saikia were present, was conducted to discuss the nominations. The committee approved all 13 applications and directed them to be sent to the central leadership for consideration.
Some of the notable applicants are:
• Mission Ranjan Das: Incumbent Rajya Sabha MP.
• Rajen Gohain: Former Union Minister.
• Queen Oja: Former Lok Sabha MP.
• Dr. Rajdeep Roy: Former Lok Sabha MP.
• Dr. Sunita Changkakati: Former Chairperson of the Assam State Child Welfare Commission.
Other candidates are BJP leaders Dr. Pradip Thakuria, Dr. Sanjib Goswami, Dr. Dayananda Borgohain, Dr. Vijay Kumar Gupta, Mridula Barkakati, Bhaskar Dahal, Kanad Purkayastha, and Biswarup Bhattacharjee.
The election timetable is as follows:
• Last date for filing nominations: 9th June
• Scrutiny of nominations: 10th June
• Last date for withdrawal of candidatures: 12th June
• Polling date: 19th June, 9 AM to 4 PM
• Counting of votes: 19th June, 5 PM.
