The political landscape in Assam has been stirred once again as Akhil Gogoi, the president of Raijor Dal, has launched a fierce critique against the Director General of Police (DGP), GP Singh. Accusing Singh of employing political manoeuvres and suppressing dissent, Gogoi has vowed to persist in his protest against the contentious Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
In a recent statement disseminated to the media, Gogoi did not mince words as he directly addressed Singh’s purported exploitation of power dynamics. He clarified that his previous remarks were not aimed at Singh’s deceased father, as misconstrued, but were directed at the hierarchical power structure prevalent in democratic protests. Gogoi staunchly defended the constitutional right to dissent while condemning what he perceives as Singh’s endeavours to quash opposition voices.
Pointing to the sacrifices made during the anti-CAA movement, Gogoi underscored the poignant loss of Assamese youths and the enduring anguish experienced by their families. He painted a grim picture of the Assam Police under Singh’s leadership, likening it to a “mafia gang leader” and alleging its role in perpetuating political oppression.
For Gogoi, the clash with Singh transcends personal animosity and assumes a larger ideological dimension. Firm in his stance against the CAA, he vowed to persevere in his struggle despite facing intimidation and suppression. Gogoi called upon Singh to publicly apologize for what he perceived as transgressions against democratic principles.
