The Consulate General of India in New York has informed that a student from Andhra Pradesh, India, tragically lost his life in a bike accident in New York, US.
The student, Shri Belem Atchyuth, was enrolled at The State University of New York (SUNY). The consulate expressed their condolences to the family of the deceased student and assured that they are providing support to his family members. Additionally, they have reached out to local authorities to ensure that all necessary assistance is extended.
The occurrence brings attention to a troubling pattern of Indian-origin students meeting untimely deaths in the United States. In a recent incident in April, Mohammed Abdul Arfath, another student, was discovered deceased in Ohio after being reported missing since March. The Consulate General of India in New York conveyed profound sadness regarding Arfath’s passing and is actively working together with local authorities to guarantee a thorough investigation.
Arafat, a Hyderabad native, travelled to the United States in May 2023 to pursue a Master’s degree in IT at Cleveland University. However, he has been missing since March 7 of this year. Mohd Saleem, his father, received a phone call from an unknown individual 10 days after his son’s disappearance, stating that Arafat had been kidnapped. The unidentified caller also requested a ransom of USD 1200 for his safe return.
In April, Uma Satya Sai Gadde, an Indian student residing in Cleveland, Ohio, passed away and an investigation into the matter is currently ongoing. Earlier in February, another Indian student was subjected to a violent assault in Chicago. In response to this unfortunate incident, the Indian Consulate in Chicago confirmed that they were actively communicating with the victim, Syed Mazahir Ali, and his wife in India.
