Two students from Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute (BMCRI) have tested positive for Cholera, indicating a growing concern in Bengaluru. On Saturday, it was reported that a total of 47 students from the BMCRI’s girls’ hostel exhibited similar symptoms and were promptly taken to Victoria Hospital for immediate medical attention.

The warden of a girls was suspended on Saturday. The suspension came after the female students were admitted to Victoria Hospital on Friday. While two of them tested positive for the Cholera disease, the test report of a third student is still awaited.

Reports indicate that the students experienced symptoms of loose stools and dehydration, and were additionally diagnosed with acute gastroenteritis. Subsequently, the stool samples from all the patients were forwarded for culture and sensitivity tests.

The management has addressed concerns regarding the water quality provided to the hostel, stating that the infection did not originate from the water source. Extensive testing of water samples from the girls’ hostel has confirmed the absence of Cholera. The affected individuals are currently undergoing treatment with antibiotics and intravenous fluids.

The Karnataka Health and Family Welfare Department announced on Friday that there has been a total of six confirmed cholera cases in the state this year, with five of them being reported in March. It was also revealed that a man residing in a boys’ PG in Bengaluru’s Malleshwaram tested positive for cholera. Nevertheless, the Karnataka Health Department emphasized that there is currently no cholera outbreak in the state, as the cases are isolated and not widespread.
