India and Maldives Mark 60 Years of Diplomatic Relations with Strategic Announcements
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s two-day visit to the Maldives on July 25–26, 2025, stands as a diplomatic high point, reinforcing India’s leadership in the Indian Ocean and reaffirming ties with a key maritime neighbor. At the invitation of Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu, Modi participated as the Guest of Honour in the Maldives’ 60th Independence Day celebrations, highlighting the shared democratic and cultural legacy of both nations.
This visit comes subsequent to a period of diplomatic tension between the two countries, mostly at the start of President Muizzu’s term, in which the Maldives had drifted closer to China. However, during this trip, the tone was significantly different-from formal welcome and cultural celebrations to bilaterally negotiating meetings, a renewed cooperation spirit marked the visit. President Muizzu, previously reported to be skeptical regarding Indian influence, gave a warm welcome, marking attempts to counterbalance the Maldives’ foreign policy according to India’s “Neighbourhood First” policy.
India extended a Line of Credit of ₹4,850 crore ($565 million) to aid Maldivian development and infrastructure. Key agreements were inked, ranging from climate resilience to digital payments using UPI, fisheries, maritime security, and even the opening of Free Trade Agreement negotiations. India also relaxed debt liabilities and extended further defense hardware to boost the Maldives’ coastal protection.
The visit highlighted people-to-people connectivity as well. PM Modi spoke to the Indian diaspora, expressing gratitude to them for being cultural ambassadors. He also dedicated important projects such as the expansion of the Hanimadhoo Airport, undertaken under Indian aid, enhancing regional connectivity and tourism in northern Maldives.
One of the most symbolic moments of the visit was the reciprocal recognition of demographic and cultural connections. Children in traditional Maldivian clothes chanted “Vande Mataram” as part of the reception, and Indian and Maldivian flags adorned the streets of Malé.
As the Maldives celebrates its independence, India’s presence at the heart of the celebration signals a deepening partnership built on mutual respect and shared maritime security interests. PM Modi’s visit effectively turned a diplomatic pause into a new chapter of strengthened regional cooperation, one where India continues to act as a stabilizing, supportive partner in the Indo-Pacific.
