The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Meghalaya has inaugurated a computer training center at its temporary campus in Bijni Complex, Laitumkhrah.
This initiative is geared towards improving the livelihood opportunities for visually impaired individuals in Meghalaya, where an estimated 2300 people are affected.
The training course, spanning two months, will cover fundamental skills such as Microsoft Office, Excel, document processing, web navigation, and social media usage tailored for visually impaired participants. The inaugural batch will accommodate 10 individuals, with certificates awarded by NIT Meghalaya upon completion. Additionally, NIT Meghalaya plans to establish a dedicated skill development center at its main Sohra campus to further empower differently-abled individuals.
The center’s opening ceremony was attended by Maya Alagh and Sunil Alagh, Chairman of the Board of Directors at NIT Meghalaya, alongside Professor Pinakeswar Mahanta, Director of NIT Meghalaya, and other university personnel. Dr. Bunil Kumar Balabantaray, Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, led the team responsible for developing the center. Representatives from Blind Lead Trust, including Jitendra Dkhar (Co-Founder Managing Director), Bandwina Khymdeit (Secretary), Kanai Debnath (Trustee), and Kamdathmu Langstang (Trustee), were also present.
