An incident in Assam involving a night super bus hitting a traffic constable and fleeing the scene has resulted in the seizure of the bus and leaving its 37 passengers stranded. This event has brought attention to significant issues regarding road safety, especially during night-time travel.
Chaos erupted at the Moran police station in Assam as the night bus ‘Tanuj’ was apprehended following its alleged involvement in a hit-and-run incident on National Highway 37. The bus, en route to Guwahati, was seized by the police after supposedly colliding with a traffic constable and hastily escaping the scene, leaving its bewildered passengers in a state of disarray and doubt.
Traffic Constable Chandra Kamal Ahom from Moranhat police station was involved in an incident when the ‘Tanuj’ bus collided with his motorcycle near Khowang Chariali. As a result, the constable sustained severe injuries and was promptly transported to Moran Medical Centre for immediate medical attention, thankfully escaping any life-threatening danger.
The ‘Tanuj’ night super bus, bearing the registration number AS 01MC 0907, purportedly absconded from the site following the accident. Nevertheless, the Moran police swiftly intervened, apprehending the bus and instigating a tumultuous situation among its 37 passengers, who found themselves abandoned at the police station.
The stranded passengers found themselves waiting for a solution at Moran police station for a number of hours, from 10 pm to 2 am, as they navigated through the unforeseen circumstances. Subsequently, the Moran police coordinated the provision of an alternative Ultra bus to ensure the safe transportation of the passengers to Guwahati.
In addition to the heightened tension, travellers alleged that the apprehended driver of the night bus seemed to be intoxicated. Observers detailed that the collision occurred while attempting to overtake another night super bus on the National Highway, prompting worries regarding the irresponsible driving behaviour of certain night bus operators.
