Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) observed its 250th Foundation Day on May 14, 2024, in Mumbai, led by Defence Secretary Shri Giridhar Aramane.

The occasion featured several notable events, including the allotment of land by the Mumbai Port Authority, the debut of an indigenous midget submarine prototype, the introduction of a Solar Electric Hybrid boat and a Fuel Cell Electric Ferry, the unveiling of a commemorative coin, and a technical seminar on the future of shipbuilding.

During his speech, Defence Secretary Shri Aramane commended MDL as a vital asset to India, accentuating its pivotal role in strengthening the nation’s economy and security through its endeavours in naval and commercial shipbuilding. He underscored MDL’s position as India’s largest shipyard, contributing significantly to the Indian Navy while extending its footprint in global markets.

Shri Aramane emphasized India’s strategic significance in the Indo-Pacific region and ongoing endeavours to enhance domestic shipbuilding capabilities. He advocated for increased collaboration between the public and private sectors to address both national and international demands. Stressing the importance of self-reliance, he urged MDL to take the lead in warship building technology and establish a consortium of shipbuilders.

Furthermore, the Defence Secretary highlighted the crucial role of the Indian Navy in regional and extra regional security, particularly in the Arabian Sea, underscoring the geopolitical imperative for India to develop and pioneer indigenous cutting-edge technologies.
Since its modest inception in 1774 to its current status as a significant contributor under the guidance of the Government of India starting from 1960, MDL’s 250-year evolution showcases its strength and lasting impact on the maritime industry.
