Mumbai City FC emerged victorious over Mohun Bagan Super Giant with a 3-1 win in the final of the Indian Super League 2023-24, held at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata on Saturday.
Jason Cummings opened the scoring for the Mariners in the 44th minute, but second-half goals from Jorge Diaz in the 53rd minute, Bipin Singh in the 81st minute, and Jakub Vojtus in the 90+7th minute secured MCFC their second ISL title.
By the way, Mumbai City FC clinched their first championship in the 2020-21 season by defeating ATK Mohun Bagan in the final match. During the ISL 2023-24 final, the visiting team took control of the game after a rough beginning, appearing increasingly threatening as the match unfolded. MBSG also posed a threat on the counterattack.
Mumbai City FC missed an early chance as Lallianzuala Chhangte couldn’t convert from a tight angle. Minutes later, Chhangte hit the crossbar from a free-kick. Mohun Bagan had opportunities too, with Liston Colaco’s shot saved by Phurba Lachenpa, but a mistake by the Mumbai keeper allowed Cummings to score just before half-time, giving Mohun Bagan the lead.
Trailing 1-0 at halftime, Mumbai City FC responded in the second half, with Diaz equalizing after receiving a superb long ball from Alberto Noguera. Mumbai had two chances to take the lead, but Jayesh Rane and Rahul Bheke failed to convert. Bipin Singh, who previously scored against Mohun Bagan in the 2021 final, put Mumbai ahead 2-1 after being set up by Chhangte and Vojtus. Despite Mohun Bagan’s efforts to equalize, Mumbai’s defense, led by Rahul Bheke, held firm. Jakub Vojtus sealed the victory for Mumbai City FC with a goal in added time.
