In a spine-chilling incident that has left Guwahati in shock, a mother turned murderer on Mother’s Day — May 11, 2025. Dipali Rajbongshi, a clinic worker, allegedly killed her 10-year-old son, Mrinmoy Barman, with the help of her extramarital partner, Jyotimoy Haloi, a temporary peon at the Accountant General’s office. The motive behind the crime, as per police, was to eliminate the child who had become an ‘obstacle’ in their illicit relationship.

The gruesome act came to light on May 12, when a local scrap collector discovered a suspicious black trolley bag lying in the bushes near the Forest Department office in Basistha, along the deserted road connecting Basistha and Indira Nagar. Upon opening the half-zipped bag, he was horrified to find human legs protruding from it. The shocked man immediately informed the Basistha Police, who rushed to the scene and launched a high-level investigation.

The body was later identified as that of Mrinmoy Barman, a Class V student at Navodaya Jatiya Vidyalaya, roll number 1. He had been reported missing just a few hours earlier by none other than his mother, Dipali. However, her statements during interrogation began to raise red flags. Discrepancies and inconsistencies led investigators to dig deeper, and under sustained questioning, Dipali broke down and confessed.

The investigation revealed chilling details. On the morning of May 11 — Mother’s Day — Dipali and Jyotimoy lured Mrinmoy out of their Jayanagar residence by offering him chocolates. The couple had already planned everything meticulously. They carried with them a 12-inch-long and 12-inch-wide black trolley suitcase — indicating premeditated intent. They took the unsuspecting child on a bike ride to Basistha, where the crime was committed. Investigators believe the murder occurred at the same site where the body was later dumped. Mrinmoy’s schoolbag was also found nearby, further confirming the location as the actual crime scene.

After killing the child, the couple stuffed his body into the trolley bag and dumped it in the bushes. They then returned home, pretending nothing had happened. Shockingly, Dipali continued to act as a devastated mother, even filing a missing person’s report for her son. But her performance did not hold for long under police scrutiny.

Following their arrest, both accused were taken to the crime scene by police for reconstruction. A magistrate was present during the reenactment, and all necessary forensic evidence — including the child’s remains and belongings — has been sent for further analysis.

The murder has stunned the city — not only because of its brutality and planning but also because it was committed by the child’s own mother on a day meant to honour maternal love and sacrifice. Dipali Rajbongshi and Jyotimoy Haloi are currently in police custody at Basistha Police Station, and the investigation is ongoing.
