Tensions about the practice of offering namaz on campus are said to have been the reason for a late-night incident at Gujarat University that left five foreign students with serious injuries.
The students were offering namaz in their hostels. They are from Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, South Africa, and Sri Lanka. The students gathered inside the hostel to offer tarawih, a night-time namaz during Ramadan, as they claimed that the Ahmedabad campus lacks a mosque. The students claim that shortly after, a mob with knives and sticks broke into the hostel, attacked the residents, and vandalized their rooms. The students claim that despite their best efforts, the hostel security guard was unable to disperse the crowd. On social media, videos of the assault on the international students have gone viral. The footage appears to show that at least five cars were damaged.
Five individuals were hurt as members of the two groups came to blows. The incident happened at Gujarat University’s Block A, which houses the international students.
The additional commissioner of police for Ahmedabad city promised that the attackers would be apprehended shortly and verified that a formal complaint has been lodged. Only one of the injured international students is still in the hospital, according to Badgujar; the others have already received treatment and been released.
