The Zokhawthar bridge, connecting India and Myanmar in Champhai district, was reopened on April 20 after a temporary closure during the Lok Sabha MP election.

The President of Zokhawthar Branch YMA has emphasized in the reports that even though the border has been reopened, there will be limitations on movements unlike before. The Assam Rifles will closely monitor the bridge and other connections across the Tiau river. Nevertheless, the paramilitary force has mentioned that exceptions will be granted for individuals dealing with medical emergencies, students traveling for educational purposes, and other urgent situations.

The Assam Rifles have also announced that the border will be reopened until April 30, and will be completely closed starting from May 1, 2024.

The community leaders of Zokhawthar have raised concerns regarding the termination of the free movement agreement between India and Myanmar. However, the Assam Rifles officials have chosen not to give conclusive responses, stating that they are simply carrying out instructions from higher authorities. Additionally, the paramilitary force has requested the community leaders of Zokhawthar to inform the Myanmar People’s Army PDF stationed at Hualngoram and the Tiau Youth Association about their upcoming meeting.

India is currently in the process of enhancing the route from Zokhawthar in Mizoram to Tedim in Chin State of Myanmar. This upgrade is intended to serve as an additional connection to the India–Myanmar–Thailand Trilateral Highway (IMT), which forms part of the Asian Highway Network. The existing route through Moreh in Manipur will have an alternative option with the Zokhawthar-Tedim connectivity to the IMT.

The Zokhawthar border plays a crucial role in facilitating trade, commerce, and interpersonal connections between India and Myanmar.
