A Kerala school has introduced Iris, the first generative AI teacher in India. Equipped with an Intel processor it is set to revolutionise education. It is 2024; Artificial Intelligence has come a long way to the extent that it becomes difficult sometimes to differentiate it from reality. AI has become one of the most trending topics in the field of technology in the past few years and has touched all aspects of our lifestyle, including education.
KTCT Higher Secondary School in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, is taking a revolutionary step in education with the introduction of the AI teacher. Developed in collaboration with Makerlabs Edutech, Iris is the first humanoid robot teacher in the state and possibly the entire country. An initiative by the Kaduvayil Thangal Charitable Trust, Iris is part of the Atal Tinkering Lab (ATL) project, a 2021 NITI Aayog initiative designed to boost extracurricular activities in schools. Iris boasts a range of features to focus at revolutionising traditional teaching methods. With the ability to speak three languages- English, Malayalam and Hindi, answering complex questions providing a learning environment with good engagement, Iris offers a personalised learning journey for each student. Its features include voice assistance, interactive learning modules, manipulation capabilities, and mobility, making it an invaluable asset in the classroom.
Makerlabs posted a video of Iris on Instagram and wrote, “With IRIS, we’ve set out to revolutionize education by harnessing the power of AI to create a truly personalized learning experience. By adapting to each student’s needs and preferences, IRIS empowers educators to deliver engaging and effective lessons like never before.” While the long-term affect remains to be seen, Iris certainly presents a glimpse into the future of school education, where AI plays a strong part within the classroom.
