M C Mary Kom, a boxing legend and 2012 Olympic Games bronze medallist, has resigned from her position as Chef-de-Mission of the Indian contingent for the Paris Olympic Games due to personal reasons.

Mary Kom, who was designated as the Chef de Mission of the Indian Contingent in the previous month, penned a letter to Dr PT Usha, the president of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), expressing her desire to step down from her role as Chef-de-Mission of the Indian contingent. In her correspondence to the IOA President, Mary Kom conveyed her gratitude to the Indian Olympic Association for entrusting her with the responsibility to serve as Chef de Mission in Paris 2024.

She expressed her pride in serving her country in any capacity, but unfortunately had to resign due to personal reasons. She mentioned feeling embarrassed about stepping back from her commitment, but stated that she had no other option. The letter also mentioned her excitement to support her country and the athletes at the Olympic Games.

Kom was designated as the Chef-de-Mission for India’s Paris Olympics squad by the IOA on March 21. The 41-year-old boxer has competed for the nation in two Olympic Games (2016 Rio and 2020), securing a bronze medal in the 2012 London Games but falling short of a medal in the Tokyo Games. The upcoming Paris Olympic Games are set to be held from July 26 to August 11 in the capital of France.
