The Majuli Zila Satra Mahasabha has recently made a noteworthy decision by taking a firm stand against Zubeen Garg. In light of this important development, Zubeen has been strongly advised to abstain from participating in any cultural gatherings organized in Majuli.
Moreover, there exists a proposal to withdraw the honorific title of “Sangeet Sindhu” granted to Zubeen by the music community in Majuli. This resolution highlights a notable change in the prevailing attitude towards the artist.
The gravity of the situation will be highlighted when informing the District Commissioner about this progress. The fate of Zubeen Garg’s planned concert in East Majuli on April 29 is uncertain, and it is the committee and administration’s duty to ensure harmony if the event takes place. It is worth mentioning that Zubeen Garg was involved in a controversy during the 66th Central Rongali Bihu Sammilan in Majuli on April 22.
Zubeen Garg, who was invited as the chief guest on the final day of the event, was honoured with the prestigious ‘Sangeet Sindhu’ title by the satradhikar of Garhmoor Satra. However, controversy arose when Garg criticized the practice of regarding satradhikars as divine beings, stating, “Ordinary people consider the satradhikars as gods. This is completely unacceptable. Krishna was never a god… he was a human being.” Additionally, he exhibited a sense of arrogance by proclaiming, “I am someone … who doesn’t care.”
Garg’s remarks ignited intense responses within Satrapeeth Majuli and across various social media platforms. In the face of the criticism, the artist recognized his error and promptly offered an apology. Nonetheless, numerous individuals in Majuli are now questioning Garg’s aptitude as an artist, pondering whether he truly embodies the essential attributes anticipated from someone in his esteemed position.
