The Kerala government plans to send 80,000 secondary school teachers for a three-day AI hands-on training.
The implementation of AI in teaching methods will serve as a crucial milestone in the education system, revolutionizing the educational landscape in India. Kerala Infrastructure and Technology for Education (KITE) has organized a program, set to begin on May 2 and last for three days, with the objective of providing educators teaching Classes 8 to 12 with necessary AI skills by August 2024.
The training curriculum provided by KITE consists of hands-on workshops on Prompt Engineering and Machine Learning, which will enable teachers to develop precise prompts necessary for efficient AI utilization and engage with programming techniques. This initiative aims to empower educators and equip them with the skills to effectively utilize specialized AI tools, as stated in an official announcement from Kerala. The main goal of the training is to enable teachers to personalize learning activities for individual students and adjust resources to meet diverse learning needs, including those of students with disabilities.
At the core of the training program lies the incorporation of AI tools for the purpose of document summarization. This empowers educators to extract essential information from various sources such as PDFs, images, and videos, and present it in a concise and informative manner. Moreover, teachers will acquire skills in generating subject-specific visuals, which can be transformed into cartoons or paintings, and seamlessly integrating text to enhance classroom engagement and content delivery. By utilizing data visualization techniques, educators will delve into the vast potential of AI in creating dynamic presentations, animations, and customizing tables, graphs, and charts to cater to the specific educational requirements.
In anticipation of this extensive training program, KITE has established comprehensive instructions. Every training group will comprise 25 educators who will be furnished with laptops and mobile devices. These teachers will make use of exclusive G-Suite accounts offered by KITE to safeguard data confidentiality while utilizing AI tools, thereby obviating the necessity for personal email credentials.
K. Anvar Sadath, Chief Executive Officer of KITE, highlighted the importance of the program in not only providing AI skills but also promoting responsible AI utilization among educators. Attendees will gain the ability to recognize possible risks linked with AI, comprehend complex concepts such as deepfakes via avatar development, and address issues related to privacy and algorithmic biases.
Significantly, a total of 180 Master Trainers affiliated with KITE have successfully undergone an intensive one-month training program focused on artificial intelligence (AI) in order to adequately prepare for its implementation. The initial sessions will specifically cater to IT coordinators in Higher Secondary and High Schools, as well as the proficient KITEs masters. This strategic approach aims to lay the foundation for the widespread integration of AI within Kerala’s secondary education sector.
