Doctors at the Kerala Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) achieved a significant medical milestone by performing minimally invasive surgery to remove a tumour from the adrenal gland of an 11-month-old child. The procedure, utilizing the Posterior Retroperitoneoscopic method, was successfully executed, offering promising outcomes for the young patient.

The baby girl, hailing from Kollam, was diagnosed with a tumour on the right adrenal gland after experiencing persistent crying. Dr. Sanuja Titus Santosh, Senior Consultant in the Department of Pediatrics, identified the tumour through ultrasound, which was later confirmed by a CT scan. The location of the tumour, near vital organs and large blood vessels, necessitated a delicate approach to surgery.

Traditionally, surgical removal of adrenal tumours involves a sizable incision in the abdomen, with extensive manipulation of internal organs. However, the posterior retroperitoneoscopic method provided a less invasive alternative, allowing access to the tumour site through a small incision in the back.

Dr. Reju Joseph Thomas, Senior Consultant in Pediatric Minimal Access Surgery, highlighted the advantages of this technique, emphasizing its ability to minimize disruption to surrounding organs. The use of specialized instruments like Ligasure facilitated precise tissue sealing and cutting, reducing the risk of blood loss and ensuring minimal postoperative discomfort and scarring.

Under the leadership of Dr. Jacob John Theophilus, Senior Consultant in Anesthesia, the surgical team executed the procedure with precision and efficiency. Dr. Shaji Palangadan, a Senior Consultant in Cardiothoracic Surgery, and Dr. Jayanand Sunil, a Consultant in Surgical Oncology, also played integral roles in the surgical team.

Remarkably, the baby displayed remarkable resilience post-surgery, exhibiting normal feeding habits and engaging in playful activities shortly after the procedure. The successful outcome underscores the expertise and dedication of the medical team at KIMS in providing advanced healthcare solutions for pediatric patients.

This groundbreaking achievement not only highlights the effectiveness of minimally invasive techniques in pediatric surgery but also offers hope for patients and families facing similar medical challenges. The collaborative efforts of the medical fraternity at KIMS exemplify a commitment to excellence in healthcare delivery, ensuring optimal outcomes for patients across all age groups.
