The death toll from the devastating cloudburst in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district has climbed to 65, with hundreds still missing as rescue operations entered the second day. The disaster struck Chositi, the last motorable village on the route to the Machail Mata temple, burying the area under debris and triggering flash floods that swept away camps, shops, and a security outpost.

The calamity occurred during the annual Machail Mata Yatra, which draws thousands of devotees to the Himalayan shrine of Mata Chandi. Officials estimate nearly 1,200 people were present at the site when the cloudburst hit. So far, 167 people have been rescued with injuries, 38 of them in serious condition. Rescue teams fear the casualty count may rise as many remain trapped under rubble and mud.

The floods caused widespread destruction, damaging at least 16 houses, three temples, government buildings, water mills, a 30-metre bridge, and over a dozen vehicles. In light of the tragedy, Independence Day celebrations in Kishtwar have been scaled down to a simple flag hoisting ceremony without cultural events.

Operations are being led by the National Disaster Response Force, the Army, and Rashtriya Rifles troops, with multiple earthmovers clearing debris. However, poor weather conditions have grounded helicopters, and damaged infrastructure has left communication lines and power supply cut off in the affected region. Hundreds are stranded in villages ahead of the disaster zone.

Authorities have placed the region on high alert, setting up control rooms and help desks to assist citizens and stranded pilgrims. The Machail Mata Yatra, which began on July 25 and was scheduled to conclude on September 5, remains suspended for the second day.
