The force’s armoury is set to witness the induction of the indigenously-developed man-portable anti-tank guided missile (MPATGM) weapon system, as the Indian Army has effectively conducted field trials for this purpose. This achievement marks a significant milestone in the advancement of the Indian Army’s capabilities.

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) officials have reported that they have designed and developed the weapon system. This system includes the MPATGM, launchers, target acquisition device, and a fire control unit. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has praised both the DRDO and the Indian Army for the system’s successful trials, describing it as a significant milestone in advancing self-reliance in the development of technologically advanced defence systems.

The MPATG weapon system underwent field evaluations in various flight configurations multiple times in order to demonstrate the technology’s superior capabilities, as stated by the defence ministry. According to the ministry, successful warhead flight trials took place at the Pokhran Field Firing Range on April 13. The performance of both the missile and warhead was deemed exceptional.

A sufficient number of missiles firing trials have been effectively carried out to ensure compliance with the General Staff Qualitative Requirements, encompassing the complete operational range. The tandem warhead system of MPATGM has undergone successful penetration trials, demonstrating its capability to overcome modern armour protection on main battle tanks.

The weapon system is fully equipped for day and night operations. The inclusion of dual mode seeker functionality significantly enhances the missile’s capabilities for tank warfare. Following the successful technology development and demonstration, the system is now prepared for final user evaluation trials before its integration into the Indian Army. Chairman DRDO Samir V Kamat extended his congratulations to the teams involved in the trials.
