India is providing humanitarian aid to Kenya following the severe floods that have affected the country. In Kenya, the recent rains have resulted in significant casualties, injuries, and displacement of a large number of people.
A relief shipment, consisting of 22 tons of humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) items, is being transported by an Indian Air Force aircraft to Kenya today. The shipment includes tents, sleeping bags/mats, blankets, power generation sets, ready-to-eat meals, basic sanitary utilities, and hygiene kits to offer immediate support to the affected population. Additionally, there are 18 tons of medical supplies, including essential drugs and surgical equipment for critical care and wound management.
The assistance also covers various essential items such as baby food, water purification supplies, menstrual hygiene products, mosquito repellents, along with diagnostic kits for malaria, dengue, and anti-venom treatment. The Ministry of External Affairs stated that these supplies can be quickly deployed on the ground to address the pressing needs.
Earlier, Indian Naval ship INS Sumedha had arrived in Mombasa on May 10th, delivering immediate relief aid, including HADR and medical supplies.
This assistance to Kenya underscores the strong and friendly relations between India and Kenya, demonstrating a commitment to South-South cooperation and prioritizing Africa, as highlighted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. India has expressed deep sympathies to the government and people of Kenya for the losses caused by the floods.
External Affairs Minister Jaishankar announced the dispatch of the second tranche of HADR materials through a post on social media platform X, emphasizing India’s steadfast support to Kenya.
The aid was transported via an Indian Air Force aircraft from Hindon Airport to Kenya. Earlier, on May 10th, India had provided food, relief, and medical supplies to Kenya, showcasing its role as the first responder in the Indian Ocean Region.
The Indian High Commission in Kenya shared updates on the aid delivery, highlighting India’s solidarity with Kenya in the face of the disaster.
According to reports, the torrential rains have resulted in extensive flooding in Kenya, leading to the destruction of numerous schools, prompting authorities to close all remaining schools until further notice.
