Today marks the commencement of the 7th edition of the India-France Joint Military Exercise SHAKTI at the Foreign Training Node in Umroi, Meghalaya.
Running until May 26, this exercise signifies a significant milestone in the ongoing defense partnership between the two nations. The opening ceremony was graced by HE Thierry Mathou, Ambassador of France to India, and Major General Prasanna Sudhakar Joshi, General Officer Commanding 51 Sub Area.
SHAKTI, a biennial training event, alternates between India and France, with the previous edition held in France in November 2021.
The Indian contingent, mainly from the RAJPUT Regiment, along with personnel from other arms and services, will undergo rigorous training exercises. Observers from the Indian Navy and the Indian Air Force will also be actively involved.
On the French side, personnel from the 13th Foreign Legion Half-Brigade (13th DBLE) will participate.
The aim of Exercise SHAKTI is to enhance the joint military capabilities of both nations, focusing on multi-domain operations in sub-conventional scenarios under Chapter VII of the United Nations Mandate. The exercise will particularly emphasize operations in semi-urban and mountainous terrains. Key objectives include achieving high physical fitness standards, refining tactical-level operations, and sharing best practices.
Tactical drills will cover various scenarios such as responding to terrorist actions, establishing command posts, securing landing sites, and utilizing drones and counter-drone systems.
Exercise SHAKTI serves as a platform for the exchange of tactics, techniques, and procedures between the armed forces of India and France. It is anticipated to enhance interoperability, camaraderie, and mutual understanding among personnel from both countries.
