The Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, in partnership with Samagra Shiksha Assam, recently held a massive Science and Maths Olympiad in Assam. This remarkable initiative aims to cultivate scientific inquisitiveness and enhance mathematical skills among students. Notably, this Olympiad is recognized as one of the most extensive events of its kind in the nation.
IIT Guwahati’s press release highlighted that more than 1.14 lakh students from 3,828 schools across Assam actively took part in an event that aimed to foster students’ skills in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) subjects.
The objectives of the Olympiad were as follows:
- Cultivating a culture of scientific inquiry and mathematical reasoning among school students
- Identifying and nurturing talented individuals in the fields of STEM subjects
- Providing a competitive platform for students to demonstrate their skills and abilities
- Raising awareness about the significance of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education among students and educators
- Fostering innovation and critical thinking skills among students
The Olympiad consisted of two parts: an OMR-based physical pen-paper test for secondary school students in Assam, aimed at evaluating their comprehension and utilization of scientific and mathematical principles, which was then succeeded by a state-level competition.
The final round of the Olympiad at IIT Guwahati featured the top 2 performers from each district. This prestigious event, held on March 30th, 2024, offered a valuable opportunity for the finalists to engage with fellow students from different parts of the state. With a total of 62 participants from classes 9th and 10th, the competition was fierce. Ultimately, 3 state winners emerged from this challenging contest.
