The recently-released Nyay Patra by the Sonia Gandhi-led party for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, scheduled to commence in seven phases starting from April 19, has become the focus of criticism from Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

During a Lok Sabha election rally in Jorhat constituency, the chief minister criticized the Congress poll promise document, labelling it as a strategy of appeasement.

According to Mr. Sarma, there is no individual in the nation, regardless of their religious affiliation, who desires the reinstatement of triple talaq, endorses child marriage, or supports polygamy. The BJP leader asserted that the Congress party’s approach is to create divisions within society in order to gain political control. On Friday, the Congress unveiled its manifesto, which centers around five fundamental principles of justice and encompasses 25 specific assurances within those pillars.

The Congress party has included several significant promises in its manifesto for the Lok Sabha polls. These include ensuring the right to apprenticeship, providing a legal guarantee for the Minimum Support Price (MSP), proposing a constitutional amendment to increase the current 50 per cent cap on reservations for Scheduled Castes (SCs), Scheduled Tribes (STs), and Other Backward Classes (OBCs). Additionally, they have pledged to conduct a nationwide caste census and abolish the Agnipath scheme. In contrast, Mr. Sarma from the BJP has emphasized that his party is leading a movement to transform the nation into a global leader, referring to it as an ‘andolan’ or movement.

Furthermore, he claimed that the saffron party and its coalition partners are poised to secure all 14 Lok Sabha seats in the state. He emphasized that positive feedback has been received from the Dhubri constituency, despite Sarma’s previous skepticism regarding the victory of the BJP-led alliance’s candidate. In response to his assertion, Bedabrata Bora, the spokesperson for Assam Congress, argued that someone like Mr. Sarma, who has switched sides, lacks the ability to comprehend the secular and inclusive values upheld by the longstanding grand old party.
