The long-awaited Rukminigaon–Downtown flyover, constructed at an expense of around ₹111 crore, will be inaugurated on Sunday, July 6, following a remarkably short completion duration of only nine months, half of the initially scheduled 18 months.
Spans 650 metres over the busy GS Road from Rukminigaon, the four-lane overpass built by Assam PWD supervised local contractor Anil Das is expected to end age-old flooding and traffic jams—particularly in monsoon seasons around the Downtown Hospital intersection.

Contemporary Solution — Precursor Warnings
While public officials, including Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, have praised the project’s efficiency and lauded laborers on social media, residents are voicing mixed reactions. The flyover’s near-immediate readiness has generated excitement, yet also unveiled signs of premature deterioration.
Local news source reports that even prior to its official inauguration, the building exhibits concerning signs of abuse—used alcoholic beverage bottles along the road and gutkha stains on the newly painted white barriers. The initial acts of destruction have sparked controversy around civic duty and the requirement for more rigorous maintenance regulations.

Monsoon Threats & Urban Challenges
Earlier this monsoon season, issues raised were the incomplete drainage and safety features at the foothold of the flyover. Residents cautioned that the unfinished features may worsen flooding and personal danger during the rainy season, undermining the flyover’s purpose.
Complaints also point to unsafe conditions for pedestrians and local vendors, including muddy access roads, open drains, and poor safety rails in surrounding neighborhoods.

Final Take
The Rukminigaon–Downtown flyover marks an important step in the urban infrastructure of Guwahati. But its long-term viability will also rely on strict safety measures, proper monsoon readiness, and active community ownership. When finally opened on July 6, the bridge will not only have to hold high—it will have to hold clean and clear for everyone.
