In a decisive move to ease traffic congestion and ensure the smooth movement of vehicles, the Guwahati Police have imposed a blanket ban on processions, rallies, marathons, walkathons, and similar events across the city limits.
The order, issued by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Administration) Imdad Ali, APS, was enforced under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, and took effect immediately.
Authorities highlighted that mass gatherings on city roads often lead to severe traffic snarls, causing inconvenience to commuters and delaying emergency services. “It is essential to manage road usage efficiently for the smooth flow of traffic in Guwahati. Processions and rallies often result in major disruptions, affecting both daily commuters and emergency responders,” the directive stated.
The police also cited public safety concerns, stressing that large gatherings frequently trigger crowding and congestion, heightening risks in case of emergencies.
Violators of the ban will face penalties under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. However, the order does provide a legal recourse—individuals or groups affected by the ban may submit written objections seeking cancellation or modification of the directive.
This sweeping restriction marks one of the strongest administrative measures taken by Guwahati Police in recent years to address chronic traffic congestion in the rapidly growing city.
