The recently built Terminal 2 (T2) at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, Guwahati, has been awarded the International Architectural Award 2025 in the Transport category, a tall order for Assam and Northeast India.
The award acknowledges architectural excellence in terms of innovation, beauty, and sustainability. T2’s design, inspired by the resilience of bamboo and the beauty of the foxtail orchid, wonderfully captures Assam’s high biodiversity and cultural heritage.

A Cultural and Eco-Friendly Design

The terminal is not merely a transport hub; it’s a gateway to culture. Its design is based on inspiration from the region and green practices. Bamboo features represent strength, and orchid details evoke grace, coming together to give a powerful yet elegant visual identity.

As part of its construction:

• It has a Sky Forest, a green indoor oasis that replicates Assam’s verdant natural landscape.
• Architectural glass and panels feature the iconic gamocha pattern, giving traditional craftsmanship a contemporary twist.
• State-of-the-art infrastructure amenities include DigiYatra-enabled e-gates, automated tray systems, and advanced security solutions.

Regional and Strategic Impact

The terminal is about 140,000 square meters in size and can serve 13.1 million passengers per annum, six times the former capacity. It is a bold move towards making Guwahati a hub airport for Northeast India.
The construction process began in the first quarter of 2025, with operational readiness being targeted towards the last quarter of 2025.

A Monument of Achieved Dreams

This world-class terminal is more than just infrastructure; it will tell a story of identity, sustainability, and innovation. Attaining the International Architectural Award puts Guwahati on the globe’s map and speaks to the might of architecture that seeks to promote cultural sensitivity and environmental stewardship.
With the launch of T2, Guwahati Airport is not just a transit point, but a reflection of Assam’s soul, presenting every traveller with the first impression of the state’s soul in its architecture.
