Google Maps is rolling out a suite of new AI-powered features for Indian users to stay ahead in the competitive mapping space, especially with Ola launching its own solution. These updates aim to improve navigation and user experience, addressing the unique challenges of Indian roads.

SIX NEW AI-POWERED FEATURES: GOOGLE MAPS

Google has announced six new features specifically tailored for the Indian market, leveraging artificial intelligence to enhance accuracy and usability. These features include:

  1. Flyover Callouts: Google Maps will now display flyover callouts in 40 cities across India to aid in navigation. This feature is available for both two-wheeler and four-wheeler modes on the Android app and Android Auto, with iOS and CarPlay support expected soon.
  2. Narrow Road Estimations:Using a specialized AI model that incorporates satellite imagery and Street View data, Google Maps can estimate road widths. By taking into account the type of road, distance between buildings, tree covers, poles, and drains, this feature helps four-wheeler drivers navigate narrow roads safely. Initially available in eight major cities, including Hyderabad and Chennai, this feature is exclusive to Android users for now, with iOS support to follow.
  3. EV Charging Stations Integration:In partnership with ElectricPe, Ather, Kazam, and Statiq, Google Maps now includes information on over 8,000 EV charging stations. This feature provides real-time availability and plug types for both two-wheelers and four-wheelers, a first for Google Maps globally. Users can filter by charger type and check the station’s open status.
  4. Metro Ticket Booking: Users in select cities can now book metro tickets directly through Google Maps, streamlining the commuting process.
  5. Simplified Incident Reporting: Reporting and confirming road incidents has been made easier with this update, available across Android, iOS, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay.
  6. Developer Integration via Routes API: Third-party app developers can now integrate these new navigation features, including narrow road alerts and flyover callouts, through Google’s Routes API.

ADDRESSING UNIQUE CHALLENGES OF INDIAN ROADS

Google has developed a new AI model to handle the complexities of Indian roads. By factoring in elements such as the type of road, distance between buildings, tree covers, poles, and drains, Google Maps provides more accurate and efficient navigation. This is especially beneficial for drivers of four-wheelers and bikers in two-wheeler mode. Pedestrians using the walking mode will also benefit from this enhancement.

ROLLOUT AND AVAILABILITY

These features are being rolled out gradually. Flyover callouts and narrow road estimations are initially available on Android devices, with support for iOS expected to follow. The EV charging station feature marks Google’s first global rollout for two-wheeler charging stations, highlighting India’s growing adoption of electric vehicles.

By introducing these features, Google Maps continues to enhance user experience and navigation safety, maintaining its edge in the competitive mapping landscape.
