Residents of Navi Mumbai were left astonished when they witnessed an unexpected sight – flamingos gracefully walking along the roads. However, this delightful encounter took a tragic turn as a few of these magnificent birds became victims of unfortunate vehicular accidents on Friday morning, specifically on the service road off Palm Beach road.

Based on accounts from individuals present at the scene, an eyewitness reported observing a solitary flamingo grappling with its ability to remain upright before eventually succumbing to the injuries it had sustained. Additionally, another avian creature was sighted traversing Palm Beach road, while four other birds displayed evident indications of anguish. Tragically, one of these distressed creatures perished in full view of the onlookers.

According to a witness, a cab heading towards Belapur via the service road at NRI junction on the Palm Beach road collided with a bird. The incident occurred at approximately 1:30 am, prompting a call to the NRI police who arrived and retrieved the motionless bird. Initially, the bird appeared disoriented after the impact and subsequently lost consciousness. Simultaneously, a separate incident unfolded nearby as a wounded flamingo was discovered within the vicinity. The Rescuing Association for Wildlife Welfare promptly intervened and transported the injured flamingo for medical attention. Officials have stated that the exact cause of the bird’s injury remains uncertain.

It is strange to see the flamingos leaving their natural habitat in the wetland and appearing on the road. The DPS Flamingo Lake has dried up, causing difficulties for the few birds that do land there in search of food. The NRI wetland is polluted, making it unattractive for flamingos to land there. Birdwatchers have the opportunity to witness thousands of flamingos landing at TS Chanakya wetland during high tide in Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary (TCFS).
