Fawad Khan and Vaani Kapoor’s upcoming movie, Abir Gulal, will not be allowed to release in India, according to sources within the Indian government. The film was originally slated for release on May 9, 2025. However, due to the controversy surrounding Khan’s involvement, it has faced intense backlash from certain political groups and sections of the public, especially after the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam that resulted in the tragic deaths of 26 tourists.

Controversial Casting Amid National Tensions

Abir Gulal has drawn attention for its casting of Pakistani actor Fawad Khan, who has faced heavy criticism following the terror attack in Kashmir. The incident has sparked a call for action against Pakistan, and many on social media have demanded that the Indian film industry sever ties with Pakistani artists. These sentiments have contributed to the growing public outrage and calls for a boycott of the film.

While the Bombay High Court had dismissed a petition in 2023 that sought a ban on Pakistani artists working in India, the political climate remains sensitive, and the film industry’s ongoing collaborations with Pakistani talent have continued to stir controversy.

Backlash Amplified by Recent Terrorist Attack

The Pahalgam terrorist attack, which took place earlier this month, claimed the lives of 26 tourists and left several others injured. Following the attack, Khan took to social media to express his sorrow, condemning the violence. In a heartfelt Instagram post, he shared his condolences, stating, “Deeply saddened to hear the news of the heinous attack in Pahalgam. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims at this hour.”

Despite Khan’s public condemnation, the film has been caught in the crossfire of the growing sentiment against Pakistan, which is now spreading to the entertainment industry. The Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE), an influential body in the Indian film industry, has strongly opposed the release of Abir Gulal in India. FWICE President BN Tiwari announced that strict measures would be taken to ensure that the film does not make it to theaters or any other platforms in India. He also confirmed that the songs or visuals of the film would not be aired in the country.
FWICE’s Strong Stand Against Pakistani Artists

In light of the escalating political tensions, FWICE has reiterated its stance on banning Pakistani artists from participating in Indian media projects. Tiwari emphasized that all necessary actions would be taken to prevent Abir Gulal from being released in India. He added that Indian platforms have been notified to avoid any association with the film, including its promotion, performances, and screenings.

Tiwari also commented on the broader impact of the terrorist attack, suggesting that it would likely widen the gap between India and Pakistan in terms of cultural and entertainment exchanges. He noted that while they could restrict Pakistani content in their sector, platforms like YouTube, which are popular for Pakistani shows, would remain largely unaffected in terms of international access.

What’s Next for Abir Gulal?

Abir Gulal, a romantic drama directed by Aarti S. Bagdi, also features Vaani Kapoor, Soni Razdan, and Ridhi Dogra in pivotal roles. Despite the controversy, the film’s makers have not yet commented on the Indian government’s decision. Whether Abir Gulal will be able to find a release elsewhere or face further restrictions in other markets remains to be seen.
