In a major development from Washington D.C., tech billionaire Elon Musk has officially stepped down from his role as a top adviser in President Donald Trump’s administration. The Tesla and SpaceX CEO announced the end of his tenure as a Special Government Employee with the Department of Government Efficiency just hours ago.
Taking to his platform X, Musk expressed gratitude to President Trump, saying, “As my scheduled time as a Special Government Employee comes to an end, I would like to thank President @realDonaldTrump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending.” He added that the mission of the Department of Government Efficiency—DOGE— “will only strengthen over time.”
But the timing of Musk’s exit has sparked speculation. Just a day earlier, he publicly criticised the President’s flagship legislative proposal—dubbed the “big beautiful bill”—calling it a “massive spending bill” that increases the deficit and undermines government efficiency.
“I think a bill can be big, or it can be beautiful—but I don’t know if it can be both” Musk Stated.
The bill, which combines major tax cuts with stricter immigration enforcement, remains under intense debate in Congress.
President Trump responded from the Oval Office this morning, defending the bill while admitting it’s still a work in progress. He said, “I’m not happy about certain aspects of it, but I’m thrilled by others. We’re going to see what happens.”
Elon Musk’s departure may be scheduled, but the timing—following public criticism of the President’s legislative priorities—raises important questions about internal disagreements and the future of reform efforts under the Trump administration.
