Today, the global community is commemorating Earth Hour Day, an annual initiative initiated by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) to promote consciousness regarding environmental concerns. This year signifies the 18th instalment of Earth Hour, carrying the theme “Biggest Hour for Earth.”
Earth Hour is a worldwide observance held each year on the final Saturday of March. The primary objective of this occasion is to raise awareness about climate change and advocate for energy conservation. The Earth Hour event was initially established and coordinated by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) in Australia in 2007 under the name ‘Lights Off’ Movement. During this day, individuals power down non-essential lights and electrical devices for a duration of one hour in honour of the festivities.
Earth Hour acts as a symbol of optimism, aspiration, and motivation, uniting individuals worldwide to unite in support of the environment. The objective is to involve as many people as possible, particularly those who may not yet comprehend the severity of the ecological emergency we confront.
In honour of Earth Hour, WWF India has unveiled a unique anthem, composed by Shantanu Moitra and performed by Papon. The lyrics, penned by Tanveer Ghazi, evoke the magnificence of nature and the collective duty we bear in safeguarding it.
Earth Hour stands as the premier global environmental initiative of WWF. Since its start 17 years ago, it has evolved into the largest grassroots movement worldwide dedicated to environmental causes, motivating individuals, communities, businesses, and organizations across over 190 countries and territories to contribute towards our shared future.
