The IIT-Guwahati student, who is in his fourth year of Biotechnology, has been apprehended by the Assam police for allegedly attempting to join the terrorist organization Islamic State (ISIS).
Authorities stated that the student was captured in Hajo on Saturday after he had expressed his desire to join the group on social media and via emails before vanishing from the IIT-Guwahati campus. This incident comes after the arrest of Haris Farooqi, the purported leader of ISIS in India, in the Dhubri district. Farooqi was taken into custody after reportedly crossing into India from Bangladesh.
According to the police, a student hailing from Delhi has been issued a lookout notice after he published an open letter on LinkedIn elucidating his intentions. He was apprehended in Hajo, which is situated around 30 km away from Guwahati, in the Kamrup district, for further interrogation. Upon reaching out to the authorities at IIT-Guwahati, the police were informed that the student had been reported as “missing” since noon, and his mobile phone was switched off.
