Bhupen Kumar Borah, President of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), has initiated legal action against Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, filing a defamation lawsuit amounting to Rs 10 crore. This action follows Sarma’s alleged remarks suggesting Borah’s potential defection to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) by 2025, which Borah vehemently denies.

The lawsuit stems from a series of statements made by Sarma, deemed damaging to Borah’s reputation and detrimental to the Congress party’s image. Borah has adamantly refuted any intentions of leaving the Congress fold for the BJP.

The official registration of the case in court marks a significant escalation in the ongoing dispute between Borah and Sarma. Speaking to media, Borah confirmed that his legal team is in the process of preparing the necessary documentation for the lawsuit.

Furthermore, the Assam Chief Minister has reiterated his bold assertion regarding Borah’s rumored defection, likening his confidence in the matter to the assurance associated with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. Sarma’s remarks imply a sense of certainty regarding Borah’s eventual transition to the BJP, emphasizing his belief that it will occur between January and March of 2025. However, he cautioned against persistent questioning by the media, suggesting that such inquiries may delay Borah’s purported move.
