Indian cricketer Yuzvendra Chahal and his estranged wife, Dhanashree Verma, are finalizing their divorce proceedings. The couple, married in 2020, has been living separately since June 2022 and filed for divorce by mutual consent on February 5, 2025.
Initially, the family court mandated a six-month cooling-off period, a standard procedure in divorce cases. However, considering Chahal’s professional commitments, particularly his participation in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) starting March 21, the Bombay High Court waived this period. Justice Madhav Jamdar directed the family court to expedite the divorce proceedings, with a decision expected by March 20.
As part of the divorce settlement, Chahal agreed to pay Verma a permanent alimony of ₹4.75 crore. To date, he has paid ₹2.37 crore, with the remaining amount to be settled as per the court’s directives.
This case has brought attention to alimony rules in India, especially concerning working women. The settlement between Chahal and Verma underscores the legal considerations in such cases.
Both parties are expected to continue their professional endeavors following the finalization of the divorce.
The court’s decision to expedite the divorce proceedings underscores the importance of considering individual circumstances, especially when professional obligations are involved. This approach aims to ensure that both parties can move forward amicably and without undue delay.
The final hearing is scheduled for March 20, after which both Chahal and Verma are expected to continue their respective professional endeavors.
